St Luke the Evangelist

wpid-stlukem_1_wm.jpg

One of four carvings lining the ceremonial path to the North Door of Wells Cathedral. They were carved by Mary Spencer Watson and presented to the cathedral in 1995. St Luke is symbolised by a winged ox or bull – a figure of sacrifice, service and strength. The ox signifies that Christians should be prepared to sacrifice themselves in following Christ. You can see my photo of St Matthew in this earlier post.

  1. This looks much older than 1995. You have so many interesting photos on your blog and I enjoy your “photographic viewpoint.”

    • Thank you! The city where I work is very beautiful and has many interesting features – unfortunately, working full time, I never seem to have enough time to see them all.

It's always great to get comments - why not leave one of your own here...
